ptp3The Johor Port Authority (JPA) is given power to regulate Port of Tanjung Pelepas. JPA is thereby responsible for all operations carried out by the port. Port users are required to obey all the rules and regulations established by JPA. JPA also has the power to issue a summons to any party that breaks a rule or regulation while in the port area.

Furthermore, JPA has the power to monitor the ports performance to ensure the maintenance of a high standard. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas is required to submit a report as specified to JPA within the specified time.

Strategic Position

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) is on a 1935-acre land and protected by a deep-water bay. Its strategic position, amidst the world busiest international shipping lanes, guarantees a good opportunity for it to become a port of call for ships passing through these waters. Its natural features, with water 15 metres deep from the surface, a length of 12.6 km and a width of 250 metres, give PTP the advantage of shorter waiting time for ships wishing to anchor.

ptp2PTP’s linkage with the Northwest highway (linking Singapore with the Thai border), and the network from PTP to Kempas (linking the port to the national grid) make PTP easily accessible to all throughout the country. Besides, this port is in the Free Zone, which includes Free Commercial Zone and Free Trade Zone. This gives customers the special benefits of freedom from customs procedures, import and export duties and import license. PTP also provides additional activities to meet market demands.

Terminal Facilities

ptp1This terminal provides 6 wharves, each measuring 360 metres. The row of wharves totals 2.16km in length. Fourteen hourbour-side Super Post Panamax cranes can lift 18 pieces of cargo, with an additional 10 pieces of cargo and 22 crates, thus enabling the terminal to meet the demands of the generation of cargo ships that calls later.

A container storage building, the largest in the country, is in the back portion of the wharves. It can store or accommodate 110,000 TEUs including more than 2,000 point reefers. Besides, an area for storing dangerous cargo, 70 cranes, trailers and other important equipment like forklift are also provided, to ensure efficient service at all times.

Performance

PTP started operations in October 1999, and carried out its first service in April 2000 with Mitsui OSK Lines.

ptp2In June, Maersk Sealand and APL – NOL began permanent service at this port. In August 2000, the port came to regard Maersk as a strategic partner estimated to bring a density of 2 million TEUs to PTP every year. In the year 2000, PTP was awarded “Best Emerging Container Terminal” on Llyods list for excellent performance throughout its operations.

Computer Efficiency

For smooth and speedy operations, PTP uses information technology services to link all port users with one another. This system also helps importers / exporters, shipping agents and the port to communicate or convey information more efficiently and quickly, without using large quantities of paper. The port is also equipped with an automatic gate system to enable faster handling of crate transportation. Moreover, wharf management; area planning and ship planning are done by the computerized system to increase productivity.
