pic_sej_pen_01Johor Port Authority (LPJ) was incorporate in 1976 under the Port Authoities Act, 1963. LPJ began operations in 1977 and was the first Malaysian Port to have a free trade zone. Since its incorporation, LPJ has undergone very ensowraging developements. In 1995, the port operations were prevatised under the Privatication Act 1990. This began LPJ's function as the regulatory authority over port operations.

Considering the need, the high demand and the limited costal area at Pasir Gudang, the Goverment took steps to open another port at Tanjung Pelapas in west Johor. The Goverment also gave approval to a private company to plan, build, run and manage the port. This second port project began in 1995. In 1999 phase 1 was completed and it began operations in October that year.

The first ferry service was run by Syarikat Ferrylink from 8th September 1993 to 8th September 1993 to 8th Aprl 2002. Then, Star Cruises took uver and is still running the ferry service today.
