FERRY SERVICE AND DEVELOPMENT OF TG. BELUNGKOR TERMINAL

The Ferry Terminal Service began operationson 8thMay 1993 between Tg Belungkor Terminal an Changi Terminal Singapore. Syarikat Ferrylink Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MBF (M) Sdn Bhd is the operator running the ferry operations between the two terminals. The ferry can carry 450 passengers and 70 vehicles.

On 16th May 2002, StarCruise (M) Sdn. Bhd, the biggest cruise ship company in Asia, took over the service from Tg. Belungkor to Changi Terminal and made Tg BelingkorTerminal the homeport for its cruise ships such as Megastar Aries and Megastar Taurus.

FERRY SERVICE PROJECT

The Johor Port Ferry Project is a Central Government project and the Johor Port Authority has been given the task of managing the service . 

The project, costing more than RM 60 million, includes the construction of the office building and jetties at Tg Belungkor Terminal and Changi Terminal, Singapore.

This is considered one of the most important projects by Government because, besides being aimed at promoting the nation’s tourist industry, it will operate as a third route linking Singapore and Johor.

The land in Changi, Singapore is leased from the Singapore Government, 3.9 hectares at a nominal cost for 30 years. However, LPJ has to pay RM 500,000 a year as property tax. Besides the service from Tg Belungkor to Changi, Singapore,LPJ has succeeded in starting services to Stulang Laut, Tg Pinang and Batam.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE TERMINAL

The Ferry Terminal made history when it was given the International Award for Tourist Hotel and Catering Industry by Editorial Office on 28th January 2004 in Madrid, Spain.Tg Belungkor Ferry Terminal is one of the port facilities in Johor that have earned certificates of compliance to the port security code (ISPS); this was in July 2005.

The Ferry Terminal was also given the Century International Era Award by Business Initiative Directionson 18th April 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland.Tg Belungkor Ferry Terminal has also organized an annual Ferry Carnival . Among the activities carried out during the Carnival are a karaoke contest at SIJORI level, Ferry Cruise, Fishing Competition, Cultural Shows and so on.

EXISTING FACILITIES

Tg Belungkor Ferry Terminal has complete infrastructure such as offices / counters of Government Departments and Shipping Agencies, Duty Free Shops, Cafeteria, Sundry Shop, Toilets, as well as comfortable Arrival and Departure areas.

In complying with ISPS, LPJ has upgraded actilities for comprehensive Security control to ensure the safety of passengers and Terminal users while at the Terminal. Tg Belungkor Ferry Terminal has a 60-mrtre jetty and 30-metre addition (Blue Dolphin) to accommodate existing vessels. Apart from these, the Ferry terminal has 2 pantoons selling fresh water with a capacity of 40 tones per hour .

PASSENGER STATISTIC 

In terms of the overall flow of passengers using Tg Belungkor Ferry Terminal over 5 years, there have not been significant changes. The following are statistics of passengers to Singapore and Indonesia from 2000 to 2004  :

The statistic above show that the member of passengers to singapore increased by 15,056 from 2003 to 2004. Passengers to Indonesia however decreased in 2004 compared with 2003, which recorded the highest figure since Tg. Belungkor Ferry Terminal was opened, that is 111,345 passengers..

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

The Terminal Management, through Strategic Planning 2005-2010 is striving to boost activities such as maximizing the sale of fresh water, cargo handling and Barter Trade. At the same time, ferry activities will continue to be the focus of efforts for example, striving the revive vehicle-carrying ferries to Singapore, ferry services in Malaysia and to nearby tourist areas.
